Getting Started

Storage Unit Basics

A beginner's guide from Lake Wylie Self Storage

Choosing the Right Unit Size

The most common mistake first-time renters make is underestimating how much space they need. Here is a quick guide:

  • 5x10 (50 sq ft): Closet contents, small furniture, seasonal items, a motorcycle
  • 10x10 (100 sq ft): 1-2 bedroom apartment, small office, studio contents
  • 10x20 (200 sq ft): 3-bedroom home, large furniture, vehicles, business inventory

Packing Your Unit

  • Use uniform-sized boxes for easier stacking
  • Label all boxes on the sides, not just the top
  • Place items you may need to access along the front wall
  • Keep a clear aisle to reach items at the back
  • Store heavier boxes on the bottom, lighter boxes on top
  • Wrap fragile items in packing paper or bubble wrap

What NOT to Store

  • Flammable or hazardous materials (paint, gasoline, propane)
  • Perishable food items
  • Living plants or animals
  • Stolen or illegal items
  • Cash, jewelry, or irreplaceable documents (use a safe deposit box)
